News Update: Victim of Feb. 11 crash on Hwy 290 ID’d, driver facing DUI charges

AUSTIN, TX – Authorities have identified the victim of a fatal pedestrian accident on Highway 290 about two weeks ago and have taken a man into custody on suspicion of DUI.

According to the Austin Police Department, the victim of the February 11th accident is 33-year-old Eric Anthony Torres, who was driving a silver 2007 Nissan Versa when he collided with a wall in the 5000 block of US-290, near the Mopac Expressway overpass.

He got out of his vehicle to check the damage when he was struck by 33-year-old Victor Sverdlin, who attempted to drive his grey 2014 Toyota Avalon around the crash.

Due to icy roadway conditions, the Versa slid on the highway and into Torres, who then fell from the side of the overpass. Despite lifesaving measures performed by EMS personnel, Torres died at the scene.

Sverdlin was booked into the Travis County Jail on charges of driving while intoxicated.

APD is asking witnesses who were released from the scene due to inclement weather conditions to come forward to help with the investigation. APD can be contacted at 512-974-5017.
