News update: Police ID victim of early-morning crash near COTA
DEL VALLE, TX – Authorities have released the identity of the man killed in a crash near the Circuit of the Americas in Del Valle last weekend.
This is an update to a previous news story.
According to the Austin Police Department, the crash claimed the life of 55-year-old Kevin Nelson.
The collision happened in the 9500 block of Circuit of the Americas Boulevard at 5:13 a.m. August 14, when the driver of a 2020 Dodge Ram pickup truck went between two metal arms of a gate blocking the entrance to the COTA. One arm of the gate then went into the pickup truck’s cab, then collided with Nelson, who was riding as a passenger in the pickup truck.
Nelson, who turned 55 only a few days before the crash, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver, who was not immediately identified, was taken to the hospital for the treatment of severe injuries.
The accident, which is Austin’s 69th fatal crash of the year, remains under investigation.
