News: TxDOT scrambles to clear roads ahead of icy storm

AUSTIN, TX – The Texas Department of Transportation is struggling to clear essential roadways in advance of more winter storms, KXAN reports.

According to TxDOT spokesperson Diann Hodges, the chemicals the department uses to prevent ice will only work on a dry surface. Crews have consequently been working around-the-clock to de-ice roadways by hand before the pre-treatment chemicals can be deployed.

TxDOT urges everyone to stay home if possible, as Austin-Travis County EMS continues to respond to a record number of cases — including 31 traffic collisions with injuries.

The increase in traffic accidents comes as fewer tow truck operators are willing to put themselves and their employees at risk.

“Right now, unfortunately, if you need a tow truck, its going to be difficult to get one fast,” one tow truck operator told KXAN.
