News: Development on Menchaca prompts safety concerns

AUSTIN, TX – As development on Menchaca Road in South Austin continues at a feverish rate, some in the area are expressing concerns that an increase in both traffic and late-night revelers may lead to more accidents.

That’s according to a report in KXAN, which quotes Adam Milne, a concerned resident who has circulated a petition and sent it to Texas Department of Transportation and City of Austin. He says he has noticed a large increase in the number of people coming to the Sweetwater Glen area for nighttime recreation, a major change to the once-sleepy residential neighborhood. He worries that the roadways in the area are not set up for the huge influx of vehicles and pedestrians.

In his proposal, Milne requests for changes to the speed limit, additional lighting and signage, and safer crossing options.

A TxDOT spokesperson said that the department and the city will meet with the Sweetwater Glen HOA soon to discuss the proposals.
