News: Collision on Cardinal Loop & TX-71 caused by driver fleeing police

AUSTIN, TX – The driver who caused the collision on Cardinal Loop and E TX-71 westbound early this morning was fleeing police at the time, KXAN reports.

Officers with APD began the pursuit in the area of Sixth Street and Red River Street at about 12:30 a.m., when they noticed the driver of a truck behaving erratically. They ran the vehicle’s plates and discovered that it had been reported stolen.

The driver fled, leading police to Riverside Drive and Montopolis Drive, where they suspended the chase over safety concerns. Mere moments later, they received reports of a crash nearby on Cardinal Loop and TX-71.

Three people were injured in that collision, one critically, and were taken to South Austin Medical Center. While we do not know which of these individuals was the driver of the stolen truck, we will continue to monitor this story and update it as possible.
