News: Austin hospitals face water service issues
AUSTIN, TX – Hospitals across Central Texas are facing a number of challenges caused by the winter storm, including decreased water pressure and food shortages, KXAN reports.
St. David’s South Austin Medical Center apparently lost water from the city, which meant that its water boiler could not heat the facility. Staff were forced to discharge some patients early, transfer others to different facilities, and bring in portable toilets.
“I don’t think people really realize the gravity of the situation,” one nurse told KXAN. She said that if conditions did not improve soon, people could die.
KUT reports that Dell Children’s was asking patients and their families to refrain from taking showers and to use sanitizer instead of soap and water to clean their hands. Toilets at the facility would not flush, and staff were forced to ration clean linens.
