News: APD identifies man killed in pickup vs. truck crash on Feb. 21
AUSTIN, TX – The Austin Police Department has released the identity of a man who died after he crashed head-first into an 18-wheeler on I-35 last month.
This is an update to a previous story.
Austin Police reports that 67-year-old Jose Rufino Cortez De Paz was killed on February 21 at about 2:35 a.m. in the 10300 block of I-35 N.
Cortez De Paz was driving a maroon 1989 Chevrolet 1500 pickup truck against the direction of traffic when he collided head-on with a black 2006 Peterbilt 18-wheeler.
He died at the scene.
The truck driver was not reported as injured.
APD continues to investigate the collision, which is Austin’s 19th fatal accident of 2021.
