News: 1 dead in fiery collision between SUV, Amazon truck

AUSTIN, TX – A driver died early this morning when their SUV slammed into an Amazon delivery truck in southeast Austin, causing both vehicles to go up in flames.

KXAN reports that the collision happened at about 2 a.m. on TX 71 near Montopolis Drive, and that all of the highway’s westbound lanes were closed well into rush hour.

Police say the 18-wheeler was parked on the shoulder when a speeding SUV slammed into its trailer, became wedged in its undercarriage, and burst into a fireball. According to CBS Austin, the SUV’s driver died at the scene, while the truck driver was not seriously hurt.

Emergency responders moved the semi to the side of the road by 7 a.m., but wreckage from the collision continued to block the highway’s traffic lanes. Police rerouted westbound traffic, while onlookers caused delays in the eastbound lanes.

This is an ongoing story. We will update this blog if more pertinent information comes to light.
